For those of you who are fans of my dear sister Merve Kavakci, today is another historical day. 13 years after walking in to the Turkish Parliament as an elected member and being prevented from taking her oath, and not serving her term, today Merve returned to the parliament to present her case and ask for her rights as well as the rights of those who elected her to serve her term. She continues to fight for the hijab ban in Turkey and to change the system, in to allowing women who wear the hijab to go to school, and work in all fields to serve their country.
Once a Super Hijabi, always a Super Hijabi.

On May 2, 1999, Merve Kavakci makes history as the first hijabi elected Member of Parliament. As she sits in her seat, she is shocked by the protests that take place against her, and is prevented from taking her oath and serving her term. |
On October 19, 2012 after years of asking for her rights back, Merve Kavakci is finally presenting her case in the parliament.

At the entrance of the Turkish Parliament, she is this time greeted by Nimet Bas, The Commision Head of The Turkish Parliament who says "Welcome back to the Parliament as a Member of Parliament who was elected and chosen by the people, but was physically forced to leave. Welcome Back!"
